We all had been teenagers once, right? We know what it was like, trying to get a bearing of who we are, acclimatising with our rapidly changing bodies, and just trying to survive the awkwardness of it all.
TeenChat aims to be a place where young girls and boys can hang out with people their age and make sense of the world together. Teen years can be rough and with TeenChat, you can have the support system of people that are currently going through the same experiences.
That's the goal. But did the chat site pull this off? Despite the chat rules and guidelines, there are still some users who might take advantage of the lax security this chat site might have. While it is completely free to use, there might be some dodgy users and scammers lurking about. With that, we had suited up and fully immersed ourselves in this site to see if TeenChat fully lives up to its potential and it is guaranteed safe for teenagers all around the world to use.
To know more about this chat site, read on our review below!
You don't have to be a member to access the site; you can log in as guest
Must be between ages 13 to 19 years old to sign up
You can link your Twitter account
Like most chat sites, TeenChat has a very simple and easy registration that will only take less than half a minute. However, since the site's demographics are teens, it is to our opinion that perhaps the site should have a much stricter sign-up process. There is an email verification, however, verifying your email does not do much since you can access the site completely without verifying your account and the email is more for TeenChat to know that it is an active address and not a fake one, instead of actually verifying the age group of their new member.
It is also disconcerting how you can just skip registration and login as a guest instead. You don't have to state your email address or even, age, for that matter. You simply type in your preferred username and you can access the site right away.
Rules require you to be within the 13 to 19-year-old age bracket. TeenChat has tons of chat policies that you must agree to before actually signing in. You can also opt to link your Twitter account to have an even quicker registration shortcut. It is a bit jarring to note that a Facebook account, where there are more personal details available, is skipped over for a Twitter account. But perhaps, the site developers just think that their niche audience is much more active on Twitter than Facebook, nowadays.
You can upload only one picture as your primary photo
There are themes to choose from for customisation
Pick a username colour to further personalise your profile
In TeenChat, you get more or less a level of customisation that is not prevalent in other dating sites or apps. This recalls other old sites like Friendster where you can customise the look of your profile to better show off your personality, compared to the newer sites of today where there is already a formatted profile. Although it is not much, in all honesty, the fact that you can still change your username colour and pick profile themes is still a welcome surprise. It is also worth noting that teens might actually buy into this gimmick more than adults. Overall, this gives the site a friendlier and more colourful look to it.
You can upload a primary photo. There are no guidelines for it. Most of the profile pictures displayed on the site are characters from anime, movie, and TV shows. There is also an "About Me" section where you can write a brief description of yourself and post your "Mood" for the day.
Further recall to Friendster, you can add friends on TeenChat and they will show up under the "Friends" tab on your profile. In this way, you can easily find the users you are frequently chatting with. You can also put them in your "Ignore" list should they act suspicious or annoying.
Join the group conversation in the chat room to meet more friends
You can also send private direct messages
Plugging other social media accounts on the chat rooms is strictly banned
Lots of active and responsive members
TeenChat further reinforces the nostalgia of Friendster where you can add people as friends. Aside from joining the group conversation on the chat room, you can add people you frequently talk to as friends. Once they accept, they will automatically be placed under the "Friends" tab on your profile. This will make keeping in touch with them easier.
Aside from group conversations, you can also send a private message. This seems to be the next popular mode of contact since not more than five minutes of creating an account, we were able to receive six direct messages. It is even more surprising that when we replied back to all six DMs, we got a reply from each. Granted, yes, that most of the direct messages were sexual in nature, it is noteworthy that the members are very much active and not bots at all. Just be vigilant at all times and mind your online activity.
In all chat rooms we have participated in, there is one prevalent theme and that is, plugging other social media platforms is strictly banned. This is, perhaps, to keep out pornographic content on the site, which is a major plus in our books!
If group conversations or private messages are not up to your speed, then you might find yourself enjoying the much more subdued style of TeenChat's blogs and forums. There is a bunch of written content you can read, ranging from "Pieces of Teen Advice" to "Gaming" and "Television Series." You can also leave comments to contribute more to the community.
Although there is a video function in the chat room, it is seldom used by members. We have noticed that the most used way of mingling with other members is through chat. If they wanted more contact, most users would exchange social media details and transfer mediums.
TeenChat offers a variety of features to make the experience more fun and engaging for its users. Here are they:
Forums act like blogs. There are posts about video games, dating, school shootings, television series, and many more. You can read these posts if they interest you and perhaps, you can leave comments, too. Compared to group chats, the forums do not have any sexual content and they are quite teen-friendly.
Chat rooms are where teens can engage and talk with one another. They can hang out in chat rooms and meet new people. The chat rooms have mostly sexually explicit conversations, though.
Fashioned after the likes of several social media sites, you can send and receive friend requests. Once you are officially friends with other users, they will appear on the "Friends" list on your profile which makes finding their profiles easier. You can stay in touch this way.
Has the same functionality as that of the web version
A convenient alternative for on-the-go teens
TeenChat, unfortunately, does not have a mobile app as a more convenient alternative for those who are tired of staring at their laptops or desktops all day. Although, the chat site has a mobile version that is optimised for mobile browsing, free to access, and has no downloads needed. Of course, nothing beats the convenience of an actual mobile app. However, having a mobile version is still a lot better than having nothing at all.
The mobile version has all the same functionalities that the web version has. However, the mobile version looks a lot denser and compact in comparison. You can still join chat groups, send personal messages, and add or accept friend requests with the mobile version. Instead of being in front of the computer all day, you can browse through TeenChat in the comforts of your phone.
"We just recently moved to a new city, my family and I. It was a bit tough, especially on my 14-year-old daughter. We had to uproot her and plunk her to a completely new environment. For a teenager, the adjustment period could really be hard. She started getting closed off from my husband and I. It got me really worried. I know something's off but she just won't verbalise it. So I looked for ways for her to have the support system she needs. I came across TeenChat and for a second there, I thought, hey, this would be great for her. At least, even if she isn't ready to talk to us yet, maybe she can still get the support from people her age, albeit online. But I was hesitant. As a parent, you will always be cautious about predators, whether in real life or not. I decided to try out TeenChat for myself first to know if it is totally safe. The look of the chat site looked promising. It looked fun and easy to use. However, five minutes into using the site, I already got four direct messages asking me if I am still a virgin. Now, that is not the kind of environment I would want for my daughter. So I crossed TeenChat off the list. I'll look for other alternatives instead, It's just a shame. It could have been a great site if it had better security and moderators." - Mother, 34
Despite TeenChat's good intentions and strong concept, the chat site failed at the most crucial aspect--security. Having a free platform for teens to talk and chat sounds great on paper. While there are chat rules and guidelines, it is safe to say that these policies can be bypassed easily, especially with the obvious lack of site moderators. It is definitely easy to sign up and lie about your age. The site only accepts people from ages 13 to 19 yet they don't have any steps on actually verifying that each new member is what they say they really are.
It also must be pointed out that while yes, our society nowadays is more saturated with sex, it still comes as a disappointment that approximately 95% of the conversations, may it be a group or direct messages, are sexually explicit in nature. If you are a teenager hoping to find some peers and exchange relatable stories with, you would be sorely disappointed. If you are a parent and been meaning to introduce your kid to this site, take note that there are still some people who partake in this conversations that might not be in their teens, themselves.
Although the design of the website is good and very teen-friendly, the idea of having a strong and healthy community for teenagers is unfortunately not executed well on this site. It has a good potential that might actually become great once changes are made--particularly, in terms of security.
