Our Review

What's Your Price was launched in 2010 by the same founder of Seeking Arrangement, Brandon Wade. So that pretty much tells you what this website is all about. For the clueless ones, What's Your Price turns dating into an incentive game. Instead of exchanging a few messages and getting to know one another, What's Your Price lets you get straight to the point. By placing bids (similar to an auction), the member will decide which offer he or she will decide to take. The bidding member is expected to pay the agreed-upon amount during the date, including all date expenses.

Member Structure

Members

  • 4,850,700+ total bids on first dates
  • The average first date offer is $125
  • Women are more likely to get bids compared to men
  • 35% are female college students
  • San Francisco men are willing to spend $130 on a first date while the nationwide average is $80

As mentioned before, women are more inclined to receive (and demand) bids for first dates compared to the male members. Some have complained because there are women who flake right after the first date. But there are also others who argue that with a website named "What's Your Price?", what you see is what you get. A significant percentage of the members are female college students, surmised to be on the site to pay for their tuition. Members come mostly from the USA, followed by the UK, then Canada. According to an analysis on the offers made on What's Your Price, San Francisco is the most "generous" city, with first date offers going up to $422.

Signing Up

What's Your Price Registration
  • Options: bid on dates or get paid for dates
  • Registration is easy and free
  • Email confirmation required

Upon registration, you are presented with two questions: your gender, and your purpose on the site. Your options can either be to bid on dates or get paid for dates. After that, you are granted access to the site. Though a banner on the top will continue to remind you to confirm your email address, you can start browsing the website with limited usability. If and when you choose to complete your profile details, you are redirected to a page where ALL fields are required. You have to provide your location, ethnicity, body type, physical characteristics, education, income, and many more.

Making Contact

What's Your Price Bids
  • You can only send messages after verifying your profile, completing your profile details, and adding a profile photo
  • $5 is the minimum bid; there is no maximum
  • Bids can be countered
  • Messages can only be exchanged once there is an accepted or unlocked offer
  • There is a chatroom

The chatting option can only be opened once an offer has been unlocked or accepted. What's Your Price used to have very specific labels: Generous for those bidding for dates, and Attractive for those receiving the bids. It went without saying, but the Generous members were usually men and the Attractive members were usually women. Though those labels seem to have been scrapped, these two groups are still dominated by the respective genders they started out with. There's no beating around the bush: if you're a man wanting to get paid for dates, you'd be hard-pressed to get one bid in a week. Women on the other hand, in addition to receiving bids, can also offer you their preferred amount (counter-bid) but you're still going to pay. This has been the dynamic on the site for a while, and we don't see it ending anytime soon. The relationships that result from this site are usually those of the sugaring nature, but love might come from it as well.

Profile Quality

What's Your Price Profile
  • You can only see who viewed you after verifying your profile, completing your profile details, and adding a profile photo
  • You have to describe yourself in more than 20 characters
  • In addition to bids, winks can be sent for free
  • The profiles are quite detailed
  • The profile information can be changed later
  • Profile pictures are visible to everyone for free
  • Most of your profile details can be added later

Profiles are limited. The required details are: body type, ethnicity, height, relationship, children, education, drinking and smoking habits, religion, occupation, income, and interests. You can choose interests between dating, friendship, long-term, sugar dating, discreet affair, or casual. You also get two boxes to "describe yourself" and "describe your ideal first date", both with a minimum 20-character limit. Even though all fields are mandatory, and it may seem like a lot in writing, it's actually insufficient. You really can't decipher a user's personality based on one descriptive sentence, but what more can you expect from today's online dating scene, really. This could be a turn off for some people, but it stays true to What's Your Price's mission: straight to the point and gets you on your date. What happens after that is up to you.

Real Life Review

"The first time I went on a date with a guy from What's Your Price, I was terrified. I thought it was a scam. But then he took me to a cocktail bar that I couldn't afford to look at normally. I've been using it since then to pay off my textbooks and bills. Like regular dates, there are good ones and there are bad ones. Really, the only difference is the bidding involved. You just have to use your instincts in order to stay safe. My tip is to always, always go to a public place on a first date. I've had to be explicit upfront about my boundaries even from the messaging stage because some of the men here seem to think that sex is part of the deal. Well, it can be, but we have to talk about it before the date." - Female Biology Major (23)

Design and Usability

Like its minimal features, What's Your Price has a minimalist design and layout. Despite being 8 years in the business, it looks modern. The homepage is dedicated to showing you the members who are currently online near your area. There are only four additional functions: the search option, your favourites, your bids, and your messages. That's all. It's straightforward and user-friendly. What's Your Price's premise is: it will help you land the first date. If it doesn't work out, then find other women on the site. Then the cycle repeats.

Editors Conclusion

Photo Chris
What's Your Price has a set dynamic between its male and female members. Women get full access to the features and dominate the getting-paid-for-dates group. Men, on the other hand, have to pay for everything. Besides the amount that was bid plus the date expenses, men also have to pay an additional fee just to unlock messaging with a member who has accepted his offer. It's up to you to decide whether this is a bit too polarizing or it's to be expected for a site like this. Overall, What's Your Price fulfills its purpose. For the men out there willing to spend dough and for the women who want to make sure their time spent preparing for a date is compensated properly, try out this site for free.
