Cougar Date is a dating website catered towards older women looking for younger men (named cougars and cubs, respectively). It is geared towards casual dating and no-strings-attached affairs rather than serious relationships. It is mainly based in the UK but it also serves members from the United States, South Africa, Ireland, and Australia. Cougar Date is run by Venntro Media Group Ltd., and has amassed about 200,000 members.

During the test, there were a lot of younger female members with ages 18 - 20. This was a surprise since cougars are generally 40 years old and above; 35 years old is already a stretched minimum (Sources: WikiHow, ThoughtCo, UrbanDictionary). Even though Cougar Date is strict about approving e-mails, they aren't strict about users having to complete their profiles. Because of this, a lot of members have incomplete accounts with default display photos.

How to Sign Up for Cougar Date

Upon registration, the only things asked are whether you're a younger man looking for a cougar or an older woman looking for a cub, name, and birthday. They expressly ask "no nicknames, please" which we take to mean that customised usernames with numbers and special characters are discouraged. Verification of your email is required, in fact heavily encouraged (there's an entire page dedicated to it after you sign up), but can be skipped temporarily.

Fortunately, you can view if a member is inactive. Although it isn't stated how many days they have to be absent from the website to qualify as "inactive", this is still a good way to save your time by filtering out those who probably won't reply any time soon.

Even though this is a relief for the people who are still timid about putting themselves out there and exposing their face to the world, this also means that fake profiles can easily be created and managed. Photos need moderator approval before they can go live. This suggests that the existence of graphic display photos isn't oversight on Cougar Date's end, but express permission.

The main information needed on a user profile is what they're "here for". This isn't a multiple-choice option. Members have to fill out this field with a self-description to let other members know more about them. It also includes when the member was last online. A user's photos (other than their display photo) cannot be viewed by free members. Cougar Date states from the get go that they are a casual hook-up site. However, with the name "Cougar Date", you would expect that they would specialise their website for older women and younger men. This is not the case. The website never mentions cougars and cubs on the website, aside from the names of some features. It's basically a regular hook-up site with "cougar" in its name. There is also no age limit for the female and male members; we found some 18-year-old "cougars" during our test. A lot of the profiles are incomplete and have no display photos. For this reason, we would be wary of availing premium memberships, specially with the sketchy structure of members allowed to register. Here's a not-so-well-known truth: you can still find older women or younger men in mainstream dating sites. You just have to set your search preferences accordingly.
